Support: How to update your terminal

In this article, you will learn how to download new configuration and software updates to your terminal.


Your terminal includes software that allows you to receive payments and carry out other functions, and configuration which determines how this software works.

From time to time, it is necessary to update the software and configuration on your terminal. This is a simple process that can usually be carried out quickly and easily.

Usually, our support team will contact you to let you know that an update is available for your terminal. In some cases, software updates are rolled out gradually to all of our customers, and you will need to wait until you are invited to update your terminal.

Step 1: Before you begin

Before you update your terminal, please ensure that:

  1. Your terminal is turned on and plugged into mains power.

    This is indicated by the green plug icon () being displayed at the top of the screen.

    Although it is possible to complete small configuration updates using only battery power, it is not recommended for larger updates such as when updating your terminal's software application.
  2. Your terminal can connect to the mobile network, and indicates good signal strength.

    This is indicated by the network bars icon (). It is recommended to check that you have four or five bars of signal.

    We also recommend that you do not attempt to update your terminal while on the move. You should do so when at home or in another fixed location.

Step 2: Updating the terminal software

In this step, your terminal will connect to CabCard's secure gateway and check for any available updates. If updates are available, the terminal will download them, then prompt you to restart the terminal. For small configuration updates, this process will take around 2-3 minutes. For larger software updates, the process will take 45-60 minutes.

  1. From the "READY" screen, press the up arrow () to show the user menu.
  2. Use the down arrow () to highlight the option "CONFIG REMOTE UPDATE" and press the green key () to select it.
  3. The terminal will now check for available updates, and begin downloading them. The terminal will show the progress percentage, and the total number of files to download, on the screen.
  4. When the process has completed, the terminal will emit a single high-pitched beep sound and you will be prompted to restart it, using the power key ().

    If, for any reason, the update process fails (this is usually indicated by a series of beeps), please follow the instructions above to retry.
  5. After restarting, please follow steps 1, 2 and 3 again to confirm that there are no pending updates available. The terminal will show the message "ALL CONFIG FILES ARE UP TO DATE".
  6. You have now completed the update process. Please see further instructions on this page if you are updating your terminal to accept American Express cards.

Step 3: Confirming your printer settings

If you are updating your terminal to accept American Express cards, you should check that your printer settings are correct, as the update process can sometimes reset them.

Remember, you need a successful merchant copy receipt for each card transaction you accept. Without this, you cannot be certain that the transaction has been completed successfully.

  1. From the "READY" screen, press the up arrow () to show the user menu.
  2. Use the down arrow () to highlight the option "PRINTER SETTINGS" and press the green key () to select it, and enter the printer menu.
  3. Highlight the option "PAPER RECEIPT" and press the green key () to select it, then press the green key () again to select "ENABLED".
  4. We recommend that you now perform a test transaction (suggested transaction amount: 5 pence) using any credit or debit card, to check that your terminal prints a receipt.
