What is changing?

From January 2018, new rules mean that it is no longer permitted to apply a surcharge to payments made by credit or debit card. This means that changes to our service offering and pricing are required in order to maintain your processing capability. Your existing terminal must be replaced as part of this change.

Why do I need a new terminal?

Your current terminal is approaching its end of life date, after which it will no longer be acceptable for use in the UK according the strict security standards applied by the acquirer banks and card schemes. In addition, with the growing popularity of contactless payments it is important to be able to accept these payments. We are upgrading the terminal hardware in our estate to the latest in payments technology. This will improve the your experience, and that of your customers.

When will my current terminal stop working?

We will contact you to advise you of the exact date after which your current terminal will cease to operate. It will be around or before the 31st of January 2017. We ask you to apply for your new terminal well in advance of that date, in order to minimise any potential disruption to that service.

Why is American Express not currently accepted?

All card payment terminals are subject to a rigorous integration and testing process before they can be used to accept card payments from customers. This is handled separately by the various card schemes. This process has been completed for Visa and Mastercard, and is underway for American Express. We expect to be able to accept American Express cards through our terminals shortly.

What cards can I accept?

At present, only Visa and Mastercard cards are accepted. This includes credit and debit, consumer and commercial cards. We are currently completing work to support American Express cards, which we expect will be completed shortly.

Can I take payments online too?

When using our Chip & PIN terminal device, you may only accept payment from a cardholder in a face-to-face manner, i.e. with the customer physically present. We can also enable you to take payments securely online using our Virtual Terminal. Please contact us for further information.

Why can't I charge a surcharge?

In July 2017 the UK government announced new rules, as part of the implementation of the revised EU Payment Services Directive (PSDII), prohibiting the use of surcharges when taking card payments. You can read more here.

What currencies do you support?

At present we only offer card processing facilities in British Pounds (GBP). However, support for other currencies may be possible in certain cases. If you would like to accept payments in another currenct, please contact us.

Can I accept contactless payments?

Yes, our new terminals support contactless payments (including Apple Pay and Android Pay), as well as Chip & PIN and magstripe payments.

Do I need a merchant account?
